A striking Victorian Scottish agate cross and fouled anchor brooch in sterling silver, set with richly coloured orange banded agate and crafted in the distinctive style of antique pebble jewellery.
Beautifully detailed and full of meaning, the cross and anchor motifs symbolise faith, hope and fidelity — giving this piece both visual presence and quiet sentiment.
The agate is a particularly attractive example, cut into a softly faceted hexagonal form and glowing with warm, spicy orange tones, subtly banded and semi-translucent in the light. It sits confidently within the anchor mount, which is enhanced by delicate hand engraving and a sculptural applied rope detail coiled naturally around the centre.
To the Victorians, the anchor and cross carried deep meaning — representing hope, faith and steadfast devotion — making this not only a visually striking piece, but one rich in sentiment and story.
Of impressive scale, the brooch makes a strong statement when worn, and features a large integrated top ring, allowing it to be styled equally beautifully as a pendant if desired. The reverse is fitted with a traditional t-hinge and c-clasp, consistent with mid-19th century construction.
