An exceptional antique Georgian 18ct gold citrine intaglio seal depicting Mars, the Roman god of war and protector of the Roman people. A superb example of a master gemstone engraver's work Mars is shown in profile wearing a majestic plumed helmet and he has curled hair and beard. The level of detailing is truly stunning and there appears to be a tiny signature or inscription on the bottom of the intaglio which we cant read.
The natural citrine is a beautiful pale golden lemon and it is mounted into a large 18ct rosy red gold-pendant fob. The top part of the fob is solid 18ct gold and the base that frames the stone is gold cased The elegant handle is engraved in sun ray style lines and the top has a large dimpled suspension ring decorated in a gold bead. Gold casing is a technique that was often used in the construction of Georgian period seal fobs. A thick layer of solid gold is mechanically bonded to a base metal (in this case silver) to reinforce strength. This was especially useful during the early 19th century when soft high carat gold was standard.
Steeped in history and oh so collectible this Georgian intaglio fob will look exquisite worn on a substantial gold chain to match his character and he can still be used to seal letters with wax.

CONDITION: in very, very good antique condition with expected signs of surface wear and age. The handle has a small depression in the side and the gold casing is slightly rubbed away in a narrow area around the base showing a band of silver underneath. The citrine intaglio is free of flaws with the seal turning out a well defined impression.
