A beautiful antique sterling silver rivière necklace hailing from the glamorous Art Deco era, circa 1920.
Measuring 16½ inches (42cm) in true collar length, the necklace sits gracefully at the base of the throat, creating a flattering, light-catching line of colour. Along its length runs a procession of raspberry pink paste gemstones, beautifully faceted and gently graduating in size to achieve that coveted rivière flow. The high quality glass stones are open-backed to allow maximum light to flow through amplifying their brilliance and sparkle. The piece is completed with a silver chain extension and an early bolt ring clasp, opening via an integrated ring rather than a later spring-loaded lever — a charming and reassuringly authentic period detail.
Derived from the French word for “river,” a rivière describes a continuous strand of gemstones (or high quality pastes) flowing uninterrupted around the neck. Popular from the Georgian period through to the height of Art Deco sophistication, this style is a timeless classic.
