A wonderful Georgian "black dot" paste solitaire ring with the glorious antique foiled gemstone set in silver over a gold button back and finished in a gold shank with wide shoulders. Black dot pastes were created by painting black dots on the culet in order to simulate old cut diamonds. Made at a time when paste gemstones could and would command higher prices than their naturally occurring gem counterparts.
Featuring an attractive rosette shaped 15ct gold top engraved in ribbon motifs this ring probably started life as a button or stud, the hallmarked 9ct gold shank having been added slightly later in the Victorian era.
A unique Georgian ring to treasure, antique hand-cut white paste gemstones, also known as Strass stones, are an absolute joy, cut the same way as their earth-mined diamond cousins they dazzled by candlelight. Today, they ooze old world charm in bucketfuls!

DATE: Georgian, circa 1800
CONDITION: overall in very good condition showing pardonable light surface wear and signs of age as to be expected in an 225 year old ring. The ring has been sized in the past and the painted black dot has mostly dispersed into the foil backing. Despite her antique age she is far from delicate and can be worn with confidence.
