A magnificent antique Victorian sterling silver statement brooch showcasing a very large specimen of Scottish agate in a rich orange/red colour showing dramatic and unique banding deep within the stone.
Crafted by hand and lovely quality the Scottish stone has a gently pillowed profile, it is set into an elegant streamlined silver bezel with a decorative silver safety chain attached. The brooch is finished in a heavy duty pin back with an extra long curved pin stem that has room behind to accommodate gathering and heavy fabrics. Traditionally in Scotland this size of brooch is used attach the tartan "fly" to the clothing and they are worn on the shoulder by men and on the breast by women.
An impressive and unique piece of antique Scottish pebble jewellery. The Victorians were absolutely fascinated with the natural world and these picturesque examples of Scottish "pebbles" were sought after and treasured fueled by Queen Victoria's great love and affection for Scotland and the jewellery created there.
