A very fine quality solid antique 9ct gold belt buckle bangle with full English hallmarks for 1848, this dates it to the high Victorian era.
The bangle is in superb antique condition and we were able to tell straightaway that this is an earlier piece by its solid construction. Although buckle bracelets remained fashionable for decades, the latter 19th century examples tended to be thinner gauge gold and lighter in weight.
Crafted on the oval in subtle rose gold, a characteristic hue of old gold, the bracelet is double walled. It has a hinge on one side and a hidden clasp with safety chain on the other. The raised buckle is set to the side amidst a superbly engraved daisy flower and fern flourish design that incorporates the "holes" on the belt. A belt tab set in the centre results in a bangle that is exquisitely decorative from every angle!
The Victorian language of love is evident in this beautiful example of a buckle bangle. Buckles were used as symbols of fidelity and unbroken bonds of love, these lovely romantic bracelets were often given to a fiancée or bride as an everlasting declaration of love. This bangle remains timeless and despite its advanced antique age it is sublimely suitable for modern wear, a substantial piece!
MATERIALS: 9ct gold
MEASUREMENTS: measures approximately 1/2" (1.3cm) wide, inside measurements: circumference of 7-1/2" (19cm), front to back 1-7/8" (4.8cm) side to side 2-1/2" (6.2cm), will fit a small to medium wrist
HALLMARKS: stamped '9-375' for 9ct gold, 'anchor' for Birmingham, date letter 'Z' for 1848 and 'J.G.G' makers mark
WEIGHT: 13.6 grams

CONDITION: in excellent condition with light surface wear in keeping with age, the hinge is solid with no slippage and the clasp is in perfect working order. Please see the photos, any dark marks are simply reflections caused by lighting
