Dating to the very early 1800's this superb quality Georgian brooch is rendered in solid silver and rose gold, set with 16 large cushion cut black dot French paste stones it has a hair work panel at the front.

The exquisite stones stones are set in a silver fluted mount that is accented with silver milgrain beading around edge. The front of the brooch has a locket compartment containing hair work protected by a thick glass panel. The rich chestnut coloured hair is woven into a tight basket weave pattern with the panel accented by a row of rose gold milgrain beads.

A sturdy pin back completes this rare incredibly pretty brooch that that would have been worn on the lightweight floral silk gowns of the romantic Regency era. There is room behind the pin stem to accommodate a chain or ribbon if you wanted to wear it as a pendant.

"Black dot pastes" were created by painting black dots on the foiled backs of hand cut lead glass stones. A highly skilled art form that imitated the facets in old cut diamonds good pastes were treasured and rivalled the value of real gemstones during the Georgian era when paste jewelry was the height of fashion and worn to impress.

Highly collectible and heirloom worthy, these days it is rare to find antique paste jewelry of this calibre let alone in such wonderful condition.

CONDITION: Lovely antique condition with minimal wear, has been well cared for. The foiling behind the stones virtually intact with minimal dulling. There is little sign of any real deterioration to the hair work, a little minor unravelling at the very edge but the compartment is free of unsightly debris. The glass panel free of chips and cracks. The sturdy pin back is in perfect working order and closes securely. Please refer to photos.
