Circa 1880, a fine example of a high quality all original Victorian guard chain necklace made in luxurious 18ct rolled gold. The gold is in a bright buttery yellow colour with a subtle rosy hue. A classic 'belcher' style chain, it is made up of 3mm round links with each alternate link soldered to its neighbour. The links are diamond faceted which adds extra sparkle and it terminates in a fixed (not swivel) dog-clip on one end and a spring-ring clasp on the other, a very versatile piece!
Measuring 57-1/2"/145cm in total length and weighing an impressive 22.4 grams, this elegant necklace is in remarkable condition for its age. It retains a rich, bright golden lustre and remains completely tarnish free. Stamped with a makers mark 'S.B & Co.' along with another mark on the dog-clip. Although not marked for metal content, it has been professionally tested and assessed as high-quality 18ct rolled gold (gold-filled). The gold casing is substantial giving the piece the look and feel of solid gold — it would be genuinely difficult to distinguish from a solid gold necklace when worn.
Rolled gold (gold filled) jewellery is a quality finish made by mechanically bonding a thick sleeve of solid gold over a base metal, durable and long lasting it is at least 5% gold by weight.
Add a locket or a pendant or not this beautiful necklace has interest whether worn long, doubled, or even tripled. During the Georgian and Victorian eras these versatile chains were one of several jewels layered and worn at the same time, they are still as stylish and eminently wearable today!
