A substantial and stately antique Victorian 9ct gold Italian lava stone cameo ring.
Neoclassical in style the ring is crafted in heavy gauge yellow gold and set with a olive green carved lava stone cameo of a classical maiden in high relief and although this lady is not particularly photogenic we can honestly say that she does look so much better in real life! The ancient stone is set into a a very deep bezel flanked by split shoulders and a thick flat band so this ring provides a lot of gold real estate and marvelous finger coverage too.
18th and 19th century visitors to Pompeii in Italy were charmed by these cameos locally carved from Mt. Etna's volcanic rock and bought them home as souvenirs of their "Grand Tour". They were considered a testimony of culture and refinement in the Victorian age and they still continue to make a statement today!

ERA: Victorian, circa 1880
CONDITION: in very, very good condition with light surface wear as expected and no thinning to the gold. There is a small surface line on the stone near to the bezel that looks like a natural imperfection rather than damage. The carving may not be as crisp as it once was but we think this just adds to her antique charm.
