This exquisite antique Georgian 9ct gold and black enamel mourning brooch has a locket compartment containing woven hair in the reverse and a loop at the side attached to a safety chain that clips off. Possibly is was made to be worn as a pendant as well although the flower motif will be sideways on if you do so.
Superb quality and steeped in sentiment the front is set in an applied forget-me-not flower spray decorated in gold mounted clusters of seeds pearls that hint at tears shed for the deceased. The larger flower head is accented with a tiny old mine-cut diamond set inside a fluted silver cup, an amazing level of detail in this piece. The brooch is finished around the edge in an ornate gold ribbon border.
The reverse of the brooch has a glass fronted locket compartment containing incredibly intricate yellowish beige hair work so finely woven it resembles a tiny piece of a jacquard fabric, perhaps it is a tiny piece of clothing, it is difficult to tell. We can also see the faint impression of an inscription in the gold on the back but sadly this has been polished out or worn away and we can't read the words.
