This ingenious fully hallmarked sterling silver brooch frame holds a huge Queen Victoria 1887 "full crown" coin. Measuring 1-1/4"/3.2cm in diameter the coin is also solid sterling silver.
Impressive to find a statement sized full crown example, we typically see the smaller "half crown" size. The cartwheel style frame is decorated in beading all the way around with turret style cut outs along the edge. It has a flat bar that clips in to hold the coin in place along with an extra long pin stem with a T-hinge and C-clasp.
During the 19th century, jewellery created from silver coins minted during Victoria's reign was very fashionable and 1887 marked the year that she celebrated her Golden Jubilee. The British public worshipped her for being 50 years a Queen and showed it by enthusiastically adorning themselves in yet more jewellery that bore her image, especially coins minted in that special year!
