A wonderful antique Victorian sterling silver working double-sided compass watch fob pendant, hallmarked in Chester in 1901. A highly collectible piece, Chester Assay Office closed in 1962, making these historic hallmarks increasingly sought after by collectors today.
The compass features different functional dials to each side, both displaying red and black enamelled directional markers and allowing the compass to be read from either face. One side is fitted with a distinctive bull's-eye crystal, while the other side is protected by a flat crystal. Both crystal faces remain clear, and the compass needle is fully functional, highly sensitive and responds readily to movement.
The compass is housed within an ornate shield-shaped mount beautifully engraved with scrolling acanthus leaf decoration. A decorative silver bead surmounts the frame, while a generous jump ring allows the piece to be worn on either a watch chain or a modern necklace chain.
Originally intended as a practical gentleman's accessory, today this unusual fob is appreciated for its combination of craftsmanship, functionality and historical charm. Working compass fobs are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples retaining clear crystals, crisp decoration and full Chester hallmarks.
A fascinating addition to any antique silver or jewellery collection, this working double-sided compass fob combines practicality, craftsmanship and Victorian ingenuity in one highly collectible piece.
