Stamped with crisp, clear Chester hallmarks for 1900, this late Victorian buckle ring is beautifully crafted in 18ct yellow gold and set with a sparkling natural Old European Cut diamond in a distinctive star setting.
The buckle motif has long been associated with loyalty, fidelity and an enduring bond, making buckle rings particularly appropriate as tokens of love and commitment. The star setting adds another layer of symbolism, traditionally associated with guidance and good fortune. Together, these details give the ring a lovely sentimental character while remaining a wonderfully wearable piece of antique jewellery.
The ring has a traditional D-shaped profile and a substantial US size 9 / UK S finger size. At just over 10mm wide across the buckle, it gives excellent coverage on the finger, while the substantial 6.2 gram weight gives it a satisfying presence when worn. The crisp definition of the buckle and star details has survived beautifully over more than 125 years.
The Chester hallmark is an especially appealing feature. Chester was one of Britain's historic assay offices, and its closure in 1962 means that Chester-marked jewellery can no longer be made, adding to the appeal of surviving examples.
A beautifully made Victorian buckle ring with an enduring romantic meaning — a wonderful antique token of love to wear and treasure.
