Optional 14ct Gold Filled Chain

A beautiful antique Victorian hidden locket pendant, crafted in solid 9ct gold and hallmarked in Birmingham in 1889. Fashioned in the form of a Templar cross (also known as a cross pattée), this unusual pendant is richly hand engraved on both sides, allowing it to be worn either way for two equally beautiful but distinctly different appearances.

One side is engraved with a charming spray of forget-me-not flowers, the enduring Victorian symbol of remembrance, faithful love and cherished memories. The other is decorated with elegant scrolling ivy, a traditional emblem of fidelity, enduring affection and everlasting friendship.

At the heart of the cross is a concealed circular locket compartment which opens to reveal its original gold picture retaining ring. The compartment is surprisingly deep and was intended to hold a treasured miniature photograph, lock of hair or other sentimental keepsake. The locket closes securely with a satisfying snap.

Hidden locket pendants of this quality were never produced in large numbers and surviving examples in solid gold are becoming increasingly difficult to find. The clever concealed design allows the pendant to appear as an elegant engraved cross while discreetly safeguarding its precious contents.

Offered as the pendant alone or it may be purchased with a new 18-inch 14k gold-filled chain, ready to wear or give as a memorable gift.

Whether acquired for its symbolism, ingenious construction or Victorian craftsmanship, this is a wonderful example of late nineteenth-century sentimental jewellery.
