Circa 1870, this striking Victorian Scottish inlaid agate sterling silver brooch is designed in the form of the iconic Saltire, or St Andrew's Cross—the national emblem of Scotland that appears on the country's flag.
Scottish jewellery of the 19th century, often referred to as pebble jewellery, is celebrated for its expert use of precisely cut agates arranged into intricate geometric mosaics. Here, a beautiful selection of natural Scottish agates, each sourced from different regions of Scotland and chosen for its unique colour and pattern, forms the distinctive Saltire design. The inlay is built upon a foundation of locally quarried black slate using a laminated construction technique more commonly associated with the earliest examples of Scottish pebble jewellery.
The oval mosaic is bezel-set within a sterling silver mount and fitted with its original Victorian pin featuring a T-hinge and C-clasp. It has a silver safety chain and securing pin, a desirable period feature. While intended primarily as protection against accidental loss, its upper attachment point would also have helped stabilise the weight of the brooch when worn, reducing its tendency to tilt forward—a practical feature particularly suited to Scottish hardstone brooches that can be front heavy.
Rich in Scottish heritage and Victorian craftsmanship, this is a beautifully preserved example of one of the most iconic designs produced during the great revival of Scottish jewellery, inspired by Queen Victoria's enduring love of the Highlands.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition with light surface wear commensurate with age. All agates are original, securely set and free from cracks or lifting. Under magnification there is a tiny surface abrasion to one green agate, visible only on very close inspection and indistinguishable from a natural inclusion to the naked eye. The bezel has a small cut-out at one edge, a feature observed on other Victorian Scottish pebble brooches which appears to relate to the original manufacturing process rather than later damage.
