A wonderfully decorative and unusually early antique sterling silver Albertina watch chain dating to the early Victorian period, circa 1840–1860.
Beautifully crafted from four rows of finely woven wheat-link chains, this elegant Albertina is distinguished by its two ornate oval stations that slide freely along the chain, an unusual feature that allows the arrangement of the chain to be subtly altered.
One end terminates in a matching tasselled drop and traditional T-bar, while the other features a fascinating screw-lock swivel dog clip. This ingenious fastening is a design more commonly associated with late Georgian and early Victorian watch chains, predating the spring-loaded clips that would become standard later in the nineteenth century. The hinged clip opens by unscrewing the collar and was engineered to provide a secure attachment for a lady's pocket watch or treasured personal accessory. It is a delightful reminder of the ingenuity and craftsmanship that characterise the jewellery of the era.
Albertinas were the feminine counterpart to the gentleman's Albert watch chain, combining practical function with an unmistakably decorative elegance. Suspended from a lady's bodice or waist belt, they carried a watch while simultaneously serving as an important piece of jewellery in their own right. Today they are highly sought after for their versatility and timeless appeal.
The generous length of this example also allows it to be worn in alternative ways, including as an unusual bracelet on many wrists, offering a wonderful opportunity to enjoy an authentic Victorian jewel in a contemporary manner.
With its flowing multi-strand construction, charming tasselled terminal and scarce early screw-lock clasp, this is a particularly attractive Albertina that beautifully captures the elegance and refinement of mid-nineteenth-century jewellery.
