Circa 1910, this exquisite British Edwardian portrait miniature is the work of the noted female artist Maud Marion Wear (1873–1955). Wear trained at the Royal Academy Schools in London and went on to enjoy a long and distinguished career combining teaching with regular exhibition over more than forty years. Her work was shown in 45 exhibitions including the Royal Academy and appearances with The Royal Miniature Society, firmly establishing her reputation within the genre.
Signed 'M Wear' lower left, a period note found with the miniature identifies the sitter as Miss Mary Smithies and states that it was painted when Wear was living at Dunrobin, Rossmore Avenue (later renamed Blair Avenue), Parkstone, Dorset.
The painting is beautifully executed in watercolour on ivory: Miss Smithies, a young Edwardian beauty, is portrayed against a softly muted blue ground. Her long blonde hair is gently curled and swept up at the crown, and she wears a delicately rendered white blouse with a lace collar, complemented by a long lariat-style necklace typical of the era. The subtle modelling, restrained palette, and sensitive handling are hallmarks of Wear’s finest work. A painting by Wear entitled 'Spanish Roses' was recently sold at a Bonhams Fine Art auction and the sitter for this miniature appears to be this same young lady depicted with long dark hair.
The portrait miniature is housed behind glass in an elegant rolled gold/gold filled pendant frame, with the original green velvet backing to the reverse. Both the portrait and its setting remain in excellent condition. Note any white streaks are reflections. It comes in an antique brown leather monogrammed case that is in aged but good condition.
A rare opportunity to acquire a wearable antique work of art by a highly regarded and historically significant female artist. Highly collectible and a true pleasure to behold!
