This is not simply an antique lorgnette. It is an exceptionally rare Georgian 18ct gold optical jewel by one of Britain's most important historic optical makers, with the unusual ability to function as a quizzing glass.
Dating to circa 1790, this exquisite semi-lorgnette and quizzing-glass combination is crafted throughout in luxurious solid 18ct gold and signed “Dollond London” across the bridge in beautifully flowing script.
The Dollond name is one of the most distinguished in the history of British optics. Peter Dollond established his London optical business in 1750 and the company soon became synonymous with exceptionally fine optical instruments that were eagerly sought by affluent and fashionable clientele.
Unlike the later spring-loaded lorgnettes of the Victorian period, this remarkable piece employs an ingenious yet beautifully simple folding mechanism. The two circular magnifying lenses open to form a semi-lorgnette and fold neatly together with a satisfying click, allowing the instrument to be held and used as a single magnifying quizzing glass.
The gold workmanship is superb. The round 18ct gold frames are joined by an elegant, intricately worked bridge, while the handle is embellished with finely executed scrolling and foliate decoration. Despite the delicacy of its appearance, the construction feels beautifully precise and remarkably substantial in the hand. Although it bears no hallmark indicating its gold content, the gold has been electronically tested at numerous points across the frames, stem and handle and consistently tests as 18ct.
Designed to be suspended from a long ribbon, guard chain or cord, lorgnettes and quizzing glasses were both practical optical aids and highly fashionable personal accessories amongst Georgian high society. They were carried and worn as conspicuous objects of refinement, transforming the simple act of examining a theatre programme, portrait — or perhaps another person across the room — into something altogether more elegant.
Over two centuries later, this example remains wonderfully usable. The lenses provide genuine magnification, making it particularly appealing as an antique pendant or magnifying glass as well as a fascinating piece of optical history.
The combination of its circa 1790 date, solid 18ct gold construction, celebrated Dollond London signature and unusual dual semi-lorgnette/quizzing-glass form makes this an exceptionally rare survivor. A beautiful Georgian object in which jewellery, fashion, science and social history come together — and a true conversation piece for the discerning collector.
