A striking and unusual Victorian fleur-de-lis silver brooch made out of carved Scottish agate. Scottish jewellery of the 19th century, often referred to as pebble jewellery, is known for this innovative use of cut or carved agate set in silver. Lapidaries working in Edinburgh's "New Town" made the majority of the pebble jewellery sourcing stones from collectors who scoured the country in search of new deposits.
The brooch is constructed in 3 separate pieces of beautiful warm spicy orange semi-translucent agate banded in dramatic lines. The carved pieces are drilled and cleverly joined together with beaded silver wire that forms the 3-dimensional fleur-de-lis design at the front. The silver wire threads through to the back and loops around to securely connect the brooch fitting. A skillful jewellery technique with no glue required!
