A striking and quite large antique Victorian sterling silver secret locket brooch dating to around 1880. Beautifully crafted in a bold circular ‘target’ design, it has the appearance of a stylised ship’s wheel, with a richly layered construction that creates wonderful depth and dimension.
The central panel is beautifully decorated with engraved stars and sweeping fan-like motifs beneath a large beaded centre. This is encircled by a twisted rope border and framed by a further ring of applied silver beadwork. The result is a wonderfully sculptural piece that captures the confident, ornamental character of late Victorian Aesthetic jewellery.
Hidden behind the decorative front is a deep locket compartment designed to hold a lock of hair, photograph or other cherished keepsake. It has a removable silver frame with original glass cover and black paper liner. The fitted frame can be removed easily with a fingernail should you wish to personalise it with your own special memento.
The brooch also retains its detachable safety chain, an appealing period feature that adds both practicality and decorative charm.
