A beautifully crafted Art Deco era sterling silver statement ring that started life as a dated silver bar awarded by the St John Ambulance Association. Issued in a variety of metals, these bars recorded annual achievements and today offer a fascinating glimpse into the past.
The front retains the raised "1938" date, framed by finely cast floral motifs and ropework borders characteristic of late Art Deco design. A subtle oxidised finish enhances the depth of the detailing, bringing contrast and definition to the design.
To the inside, the Birmingham hallmarks remain clearly preserved: the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor assay mark, date letter 'N' for 1937, and the maker's mark for William Dowler & Sons. The original registration number is also present, an intimate trace of the award's first owner and a tangible link to its history.
A weighty and comfortable D-shaped sterling silver band transforms the original bar into a distinctive ring while preserving its character and provenance.
