An exceptionally attractive late Victorian Continental silver gentleman's watch chain, complete with its original engraved breloque locket. A breloque is a decorative charm designed to adorn a gentleman's pocket watch chain, and this is a particularly lovely example. Beautifully engraved with different floral designs to each side, it opens to reveal its original tiny oval picture rings complete with their original glass covers and purple silk liners, all of which appear to have never been used.
Probably French or Belgian in origin, the chain has been professionally tested as at least sterling silver. It features alternating elongated oval and faceted round links, the former beautifully decorated with bright-cut line engraving and embossed star motifs. Elegantly proportioned and decorative in design, it has a much lighter and more refined appearance than the heavy Albert chains favoured in Britain during the same period.
The chain retains its original cylindrical T-bar, generously sized dog clip and engraved breloque, creating a wonderfully cohesive and authentic survivor from the late Victorian era.
As an added bonus, the chain can also be wrapped twice around a slim to medium wrist and worn as a striking bracelet. My wrist measures 16.5cm (6½ inches), where it fits comfortably, although it is unlikely to suit larger wrists.
Whether worn as a traditional pocket watch chain or enjoyed as an unique bracelet, this elegant Victorian piece is rich in character and history and is sure to become a treasured addition to any antique jewellery collection.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition with light, age-appropriate wear. The chain drapes beautifully and the engraved star decoration remains wonderfully crisp. The breloque displays gentle wear to the engraving together with a slight thumb-worn depression, a charming reminder that it was carried and cherished for many decades. It opens and closes securely, and the original picture rings, glass covers and purple silk liners remain complete.
