A beautiful and unusually versatile piece of Edwardian silver, this antique English cheroot case dates to 1906 and was made by the respected Birmingham silversmith George Loveridge & Co.
The cylindrical case is beautifully hand-engraved throughout with flowing oak and acanthus leaves, curling scrolls and delicate pierced dot-and-line banner decoration. At the centre is a particularly elegant shield-shaped vacant cartouche, originally intended for a personal monogram and still beautifully untouched.
It is a lovely example of Edwardian silver craftsmanship, with a wonderful contrast between the richly engraved exterior and the bright original gold gilding that remains inside. The hinged lid closes securely, and matching hallmarks can be found both inside the lid and on the collar.
A substantial hallmarked silver suspension ring at the base allows the case to be worn from a necklace, long chain or fine antique watch chain. Although originally made to carry a cheroot holder, its elegant form lends itself beautifully to modern life. It could be worn as a distinctive pendant and used to carry a tiny collection of precious keepsakes — a love note, miniature photograph, lock of hair, tiny memento or other sentimental treasure. It would also make an especially meaningful memorial keepsake for holding a small personal remembrance of someone dearly loved.
There is something particularly appealing about giving an antique object such a new purpose while preserving its history. With its beautiful engraving, original gilding and substantial silver construction, this is far more than simply a useful little silver case — it is a striking piece of Edwardian jewellery with a story waiting to be continued.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition with age-appropriate light wear. There are no dents or dings, and any dark marks visible in the photographs are reflections rather than flaws. The hinged lid is a good, tight fit and closes securely to keep your precious contents safe.
