Circa 1800, this exquisite little antique Georgian brooch is crafted in warm, rosy 15ct gold and fashioned in an elegant elliptical form. At its centre sits a delicate weave of blonde hair preserved beneath thick, convex glass. The domed crystal magnifies the intricate hairwork, bringing the detail beautifully to life.
A high-quality piece with a pleasing stepped profile, the glass panel is framed by finely worked gold milgrain beading, adding texture and refinement.
The reverse retains its original Georgian T-hinge and C-clasp fastening with an extra-long pin typical of the period.
Although antique hairwork jewellery is closely associated with mourning, pieces such as this were just as often worn as sentimental love tokens or keepsakes. Suitable for both ladies and gentlemen, these small brooches were typically worn on a gentleman’s cravat during the Georgian era and today look equally striking on a lapel, scarf, or collar.
