A beautifully preserved and substantial Victorian guard chain necklace crafted in richly coloured 18ct rolled gold, dating to around 1880–1890. At an impressive 135cm (53 inches) in length, this elegant belcher-link chain has wonderful versatility and can be worn long, doubled, or even tripled for a layered look.
The softly faceted round links catch the light beautifully, giving the necklace a warm golden sparkle without appearing overly bright or modern. Each alternating link is soldered closed, a thoughtful detail that adds strength, durability, and resistance to kinking. Weighing a very pleasing 31 grams, the chain has a luxurious feel in the hand and drapes beautifully when worn. The necklace opens and terminates with a desirable Victorian dog-clip clasp, stamped “S B C Co” to the interior.
Victorian rolled gold — also known as gold filled — was considered a premium material of the era and was used for high quality everyday jewellery intended to withstand regular wear. Unlike modern plating, the gold layer is mechanically bonded to the base metal and is exceptionally thick, often around 100 times thicker than standard gold plate. The result is jewellery with the rich colour, feel, and longevity of solid gold, but at a far more accessible price point. Indeed, before testing, we believed this piece may well have been solid gold due to the depth of colour and quality of manufacture.
Originally these long guard chains were both fashionable and practical, used to suspend pocket watches, lorgnettes, vinaigrettes, lockets, and other personal treasures. Today they remain effortlessly stylish and endlessly wearable — equally beautiful worn alone or paired with a favourite antique pendant or locket.
