A striking Victorian Scottish agate and citrine thistle brooch, dating to circa 1900, set with beautifully banded Montrose blue agates in a finely engraved sterling silver frame.
Evoking the colours and rugged textures of the Scottish Highlands, this classic example of Scottish pebble jewellery is both bold and intricately detailed. The scalloped border is set with crescent-shaped agate cabochons, their natural banding creating depth and movement across the piece.
At its centre, the thistle motif is constructed as a separate component and physically wired through the frame, a characteristic method of Victorian assembly. The silver leaves are crisply textured, and the thistle head is carved from a warm golden citrine. The surface of the silver is finely worked with delicate wiggle-work engraving and chased detailing, catching the light beautifully.
To the reverse, the brooch is fitted with a traditional C-clasp and T-hinge, typical of the period and secure in use.
A timeless and highly collectible example of Victorian Scottish jewellery, these authentic antique pieces are becoming increasingly scarce, particularly in this condition and with such strong visual impact.
