Delicate yet full of character, this charming Victorian Whitby jet pendant is carved into the unusual and rather whimsical form of a hand holding a hat decorated with flowers — a delightful motif that captures the sentimental and imaginative character of Victorian jewellery.
This petite piece appears to have originally formed part of an earring and was later converted into a pendant with the addition of a silver bail. We have paired it with a new Italian sterling silver fine trace chain, adjustable to 16 or 18 inches, so it arrives ready to wear.
Intricately carved Whitby jet earrings rarely survive as complete original pairs, so converted examples such as this offer a lovely way to preserve and enjoy the charm of the original Victorian carving. Its small scale also makes it a particularly wearable way to enjoy a little piece of Whitby’s jet jewellery history.
