Vintage c.1930 Buddha Secret Compartment Pendant | Hidden Sliding Base | Sterling Silver Chain

An intriguing c.1930 Buddha pendant featuring a concealed sliding base which opens to reveal a hidden compartment. Pendants of this type were often intended to carry a small devotional or sentimental keepsake, such as a folded prayer, tiny talisman, miniature relic, lucky paper or a pinch of blessed ash, allowing the wearer to keep a meaningful object close at hand.

Crafted in antique white metal and beautifully detailed, the concealed sliding base operates smoothly to reveal its hidden compartment—an ingenious feature that transforms the pendant from a simple devotional jewel into a miniature personal reliquary or keepsake container.

Possibly Chinese or Japanese in origin, the sliding base is stamped 'SPECIAL' together with an unidentified maker's mark, which appears to comprise of three stylised letters within a lozenge-shaped cartouche. The pendant is suspended from a vintage sterling silver 46cm (18 inch) fine curb chain, included with the sale.

A unique and intriguing pendant with a fascinating hidden compartment, we haven't encountered another example quite like it. A wonderful addition to a collection of vintage devotional objects, curiosities or unusual jewellery.
