A wonderful traditional nielloware brooch handcrafted in black enameled sterling silver. Circa 1930, the brooch depicts the dancing figure of Mekkala, the Goddess of Lightning, a Buddhist/Hindu deity. The brooch is in excellent condition with no wear to the enamel work and the pin back and safety catch are in perfect working order.
This is a fairly large size brooch measuring 2" high and 1-3/4" across (50x45mm) and it weighs 6.2 grams. It is stamped "Made in Siam" and "Sterling" on the back. Siam changed its name to Thailand in 1939 and although niello enamel jewelry is still being produced there today it is these early pieces that are particularly sought after and treasured, a lovely accent accessory good for the gents or the ladies!
At Mercy Madge we offer a carefully curated collection of antique and vintage jewellery. Each piece is hand selected with you in mind and we rarely come across two identical old treasures, once they are gone, they are truly gone!
