Circa 1940, a striking and early example of vintage Siamese nielloware, this beautifully crafted sterling silver bracelet is composed of seven articulated panels, each centred with a beautifully detailed dancing figure against a lustrous black niello ground.
The figures have an unmistakably exotic and theatrical quality, with their elegant poses, elaborate headdresses and expressive movement beautifully contrasted against the dark niello. Each figure is framed by intricate openwork silver scrollwork, creating a wonderfully decorative effect while allowing light to pass through the bracelet.
Nielloware is a distinctive Siamese metalworking tradition in which black niello is applied to recessed areas of silver, creating the dramatic silver-and-black contrast for which these pieces are so admired. The combination of finely worked silver, pierced decoration and repeated dancing figures makes this an especially eye-catching example.
The bracelet closes securely with a hidden box clasp, allowing it to sit naturally around the wrist in a continuous circle, with no interruption to the dramatic design. Please note: the antique presentation box shown in the photographs is not included.
