Inspired by Victorian jewellery design, this lovely vintage sterling silver locket dates from the 1970s and has an unusually substantial, gently tapered form. It is beautifully made, with decorative detail continuing around the entire locket so that it is just as interesting viewed from the side or reverse as it is from the front.
The front is decorated with colourful enamel work on an iridescent white ground, depicting a charming little arrangement of three flowers in red, blue and yellow, with green leaves and stems. The reverse is engraved with a classic acanthus leaf design against a finely cross-hatched ground, while the tapered sides are finished with traditional line and dot engraving. It is particularly lovely that either side can be worn facing out, giving the locket two quite different appearances.
The locket opens smoothly on its original sturdy hinge to reveal a pristine, completely unused interior, still retaining its original silver photograph frames, blue paper liners and clear protective covers. The original fittings are in remarkably fresh condition, and the locket closes securely with a satisfying firm click.
At the top is an especially pretty fan-shaped engraved bale, through which we have added a new sterling silver fine curb chain, making the locket ready to wear straight away.
An unusual and beautifully detailed vintage locket, combining the romantic character of Victorian design with the colourful enamel work and craftsmanship of the 1970s. A charming piece to wear today, with space inside for photographs, a little keepsake or other treasured memento.
