A fantastic American 1930s novelty figural fur clip depicting the famous ventriloquist's dummy Charlie McCarthy, sidekick to Edgar Bergen the father of Hollywood actress Candice Bergen. A fabulously rare late Art Deco fur clip and highly collectible!

A charming chap down to his top hat and monocle, he is a unique piece of costume jewelry history and featured in many books most notably “American Costume Jewelry: Art & Industry, 1935-1950" by Brunialti where a whole page is dedicated to him and he is pictured in a 1937 advertisement for Women's Wear Daily.

You can see our Charlie next to the one in the book in the photo. The clip is enamelled and mechanical, a little lever at the bottom operates the mouth so it opens and closes!

This is a small clip measuring 1-1/4" high by 5/8" wide (32x22mm). He is in pretty good shape, better condition than the one in to book by the looks of it! There are tiny areas of enamel loss around the edges of his hat around the lips and the nose but thankfully he hasn't been retouched and is in all original condition. The back of the brooch is silver metal that looks like it was plated in gold that has mainly worn off.

The clip at the back is still nice and tight with the mechanical lever in perfect working order. It is marked “Pat 2038343” under the clip. This utility patent was issued to Gaston Candas in 1936 according to the Brunialti book and the Women’s Wear Daily ad states that the piece was produced by Cohn & Rosenberger (Coro).

At Mercy Madge we offer distinctive and unique estate jewelry in our beautifully curated shop. Each piece is carefully hand selected by us, for you. We rarely come across two identical old treasures, once they are gone, they are truly gone!
