This delightful antique sterling silver "Fumsup" lucky charm has arms that move up and down, little silver eyes and a tiny four leaf clover faintly impressed on his wooden forehead.
He comes in an antique cardboard box printed with R.P. Lee Jewellers, Berwick-Upon-Tweed on the lid. Charmingly a hand written inscription on the bottom of the box reads "With Love from Belle, 1907" We can't say the box is original to the charm but that's how he came to us and we feel they should stay together!
The charm is 1-1/4" (3.2cm) tall with a 3.5mm jump ring. He is stamped with "FUMSUP" on his chest and on his back the British Registered Design number "RD 636612" which dates him to 1914.
He is in surprisingly good condition with all his wonderful detailing still nice and fresh. His arms move up and down to touch his wooden head for luck and thankfully he has no unsightly dents. He does have expected surface wear, some tarnish in the recesses and his wooden head has acquired a few tiny cracks over time but this is relatively minor given the age and intended use of the piece! A marvellous example of the classic Fumsup antique charm, steeped in history and sentiment and highly collectible to boot! First making his appearance at the end of the Victorian era these iconic British cherubic "touch wood" lucky charm were often sent to soldiers from their sweethearts during WWI. They were sometimes sold on a card with a charming poem which read:
Behold in me the birth of luck,
Two charms combined TOUCH WOOD-FUMSUP.
My head is made of wood most rare
My thumbs turn up to touch me there.
To speed my feet they’ve Cupid’s wings,
They’ll help true love 'mongst other things.
Proverbial is my power to bring
