Circa 1820 this late Georgian, early Victorian rolled gold guard chain necklace is made up of figure-of-eight links that are interconnected and soldered together, a very strong type of chain construction. The chain is a classic belcher link chain in a warm rosy yellow gold. The links are faceted in a diamond pattern which adds a lovely sparkle. The necklace is 54" long and it has a fixed dog-clip clasp hung at the end (it doesn't swivel).
The necklace is unmarked and we have tested and verified it as 9ct rolled gold. First patented in England in 1814 rolled gold (gold filled) is made by mechanically bonding a layer of solid gold over a base metal. Particularly popular for jewellery made during the Victorian era it is a high quality finish. Rolled gold by weight is a 1/5th solid gold.
Add a locket or a pendant or not this beautiful chain has interest whether worn long or doubled. During the Georgian and Victorian eras these essential necklaces were one of several jewels layered and worn at the same time, they were used to attach, and keep close at hand, all manner of things like pocket watches, lorgnettes, vinaigrettes and muffs. DATE: Georgian/Victorian, circa 1820
CONDITION: in very good antique condition with just minor surface wear and shows a little age related light tarnish inside the links around the soldering points, the clip is in perfect working order. Antique chains with small joined links like these can form the occasional kink however a twist at each side quickly releases it. This necklace has been professionally cleaned and polished so it is ready to wear or give as a gift.
