A remarkable antique compass fob, circa 1800. Rendered in silver gilt (silver with a thick gold overlay), it is in the bright yellow color that you only see with very high carat gold plating and it is a identifying characteristic in Georgian jewelry.
This is a fairly large size fob so the compass is nice and easy to see. It is two sided with two faces. One face has black enameled directions between red crosses the other side features black lines with the directions in red in between. The pin is arrow shaped and metallic blue and the inner workings are protected with thick crystal covers. The gold case features a scroll top and barley sugar twist accents and it benefits from a large suspension ring.
The fob is in excellent antique condition with expected signs of age and wear. The crystals are still clear and scratch free with the compass directionals fully functional and highly sensitive freely swinging with the slightest movement. Superb quality piece!
SIZE: 1-1/2" (35mm) high, 1" wide, compass face 18mm diameter.
WEIGHT: 6.1 grams.
