A stylish and elegant antique Scottish silver penannular pin in an antique blue retailers case from Grant & Son jewellers who had branches in several English border towns and proudly considered themselves as "watchmakers to the admiralty"

This is a true penannular pin, rather than a penannular style brooch so it has an open ring with a long sharp pin that moves around the ring to attach it to clothing. The ring is decorated in traditional Celtic knot patterns all the way around with a bird motif at each end. The long pin is nice and thick and is accented on the top with a rectangular shield design.

Lovely quality in thick sterling silver, if you have a penchant for antique Scottish jewellery you might be a wee bit taken with this one, a versatile and feminine Celtic accessory, decorate a jacket or coat lapel or wear it with a scarf or on a hat!

Penannular pins date back to antiquity and are a traditional and way of fastening plaids and tartans, they are worn by both men and women, usually at the shoulder by men and on the breast by women.

To fasten a penannular on tightly woven clothes the pin is pushed through the cloth and the ring is flipped down over the pin and rotated around it to secure it and give your desired effect. On loose weave fabrics and knits you can vary the look by inserting the pin, gather the cloth and pull it through the ring, pass the pin back through the open ends and rotate it to anchor the nicely pillowed fabric together.
