What a great find! This fully hallmarked antique sterling silver thimble nestles inside a real walnut shell 'case', possibly in reference to the fairy story 'Thumbelina' where she slept in a walnut shell cradle!
This adorable novelty piece came to us inside a little fitted leather purse that sadly disintegrated so it's just the shell and thimble that survives. The silver thimble is embossed in daisies and is stamped in Birmingham hallmarks dating it to 1916. The walnut shell has a glued tape 'hinge' and it still has an old piece of cotton wool inside.
This piece is in very good antique condition just showing expected signs of age like surface wear and a little tarnish. The thimble is fully functional with no tears or damage to the silver. A unique gift for someone who loves sewing!

HALLMARKS: thimble stamped 'anchor' for Birmingham, 'lion passant' for sterling, date letter 'r' for 1916, makers mark 'H.C & S' and the number '15' which is likely the size.
