A beautiful all original SKM & Co. floral engraved antique heart locket hailing from the Victorian era.
The locket is antique rolled gold/gold fill which is a bonded sleeve of solid gold over a metal core (often sterling silver) and it can withstand a lifetime of wear without loss to the gold layer, unlike modern electroplated gold. The gold is a lovely reddish shade of antique rose gold and it is engraved on the front and back in a beautiful flower and fern flourish pattern.
This is a fairly large sized and substantial locket, it opens from the side to reveal 2 small round locket frames to house your photos or other treasured keepsakes. The recesses are fairly deep so you could tuck small locks of hair in there if you wanted to. The round frames still have their original hard clear plastic photo covers and they flip out easily using your finger nail and then just clip back in position.
The locket is signed 'SKM Co' in a shield for S.K. Merrill & Co., an American manufacturer of high quality gold filled and sterling silver jewellery during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

CONDITION: Very, very good condition with light surface wear as expected in an antique piece, the gold overlay is still intact and the engraving still nice and crisp. The hinge is in perfect order and the locket closes tightly with a solid snap.
