Circa 1870 this supremely elegant Whitby jet dog collar necklace features large graduated oval faceted beads connected together with watch chain style double holed links of Whitby jet. At only 15 inches long including the clasp this necklace is meant to be worn snuggly fitted at choker length.
The beads are flat at the back so it lays perfectly around the throat. As a guide my neck measures 14-1/2 inches and it is a perfect fit, it will not fit any larger size neck. The necklace fastens with a with a barrel and torpedo hidden fastener that is set into the end beads. A typical clasp for jet necklaces of the era it gives an elegant unbroken collar effect to the line of jet beads.
The oval flat back beads graduate is size from the largest at 1-1/2 inches by 1 inch to the smallest end beads which measure 1 inch by 5/8 inches. The connecting watch chain style links measure 1 inch by 3/4 inch.
The necklace is in excellent antique condition with expected signs of wear and age. There are a few tiny nicks to the edges of the jet that is only really apparent under magnification. One of the connecting rings has been repaired but it is a strong and secure repair that is barely visible and the necklace is priced accordingly.
