This superb and extremely rare Victorian silver brooch has extensive and historical city hallmarks for Exeter, the Combe Martin silver mines in North Devon, England and design patent stamps for 1847 .
Created by silversmith Henry Ellis, this remarkable brooch is superb quality and steeped in history. Henry Ellis was appointed Silversmith In Ordinary to Her Majesty Queen Victoria in 1841 and exhibited in the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Crystal Palace, London where the Queen personally purchased 5 silver brooches from him. This brooch is also stamped 'COMBMARTIN SILVER' signifying that the silver used for it was mined in the Combe Martin silver mines in Devon. There are items in the Crown Jewels of England made from Combe Martin silver. To add even more interest the Exeter hallmarks are rare too, Exeter assay office closed in 1883 resulting in these historical town hallmarks becoming very desirable and highly sought after.
The brooch itself is beautiful, fashioned as a bow it is exquisitely chased and engraved with flowers, flourishes and a quilted pattern. The level workmanship and quality is outstanding. A sturdy pin stem and heavy duty c-clasp completes this wonderful piece of English silver history. It ticks all the boxes for the serious collector of antique rare jewellery and heirloom worthy to boot!
