This beautiful antique locket hails from the Victorian era. It is made of a old gold that has a warm, almost rose gold hue and is stamped '9ct gold back and front'
The locket is beautifully engraved with a different pattern on each side. One side has a shield motif surrounded by scrolling ferns and roses with the other decorated in an ivy pattern. In the Victorian language of flowers, the clinging ivy represented everlasting love. The sides of the locket are framed in a turret stepped design that gives lovely dimension.
The condition of the locket is quite remarkable, it looks like it could have been made yesterday with the engraving still crisp and fresh. The original picture ring is present, looks to have never been removed. The bale on the top is solid 9ct gold and soldered, it is a fairly wide bore so will fit a wide variety of chains.
"Gold Back and Front" lockets were typical of gold lockets from this era and they are at least 95% solid gold. The hinges and the loose frame inside are usually made of a sturdy base metal that has been gold plated to give long lasting durability to the soft gold.
