Evoking a world of bygone elegance this superbly crafted antique silver Swallow brooch is set with white paste "diamonds" and if you look closely you can see that this love bird has a tiny red ruby paste eye. Made in 935 silver (a higher purity of silver than sterling at 925) the brooch is probably German in origin and it dates to the late Victorian, early Edwardian period.
Swallows mate for life, they are a beloved motif in antique jewellery, speaking of eternity, loyalty and fidelity. Jewellery featuring swallows was often given to young couples or exchanged between them on their wedding day, and it was worn by both men and women.
A beautiful example of this type of antique sweetheart jewellery, steeped in sentiment and a classic love token. Good for the ladies or the gents, fab for a wedding!
