Circa 1840, this beautiful antique Victorian gold bangle is deceivingly similar in tone and weight to real antique gold, especially as it boasts genuine diamonds and rubies, but being made from Pinchbeck metal it remains fabulously affordable!
Crafted on the oval the front of the bangle is set in a row of old mine-cut diamonds and hot pink rubies all nestling in bright cut 'guiding star' settings with scrolling cannetille and ball metalwork. The bangle is hinged at one side and it fastens at the other side with a hidden shovel clasp secured with a gold safety chain.
Far from being shy and retiring the bangle is worn closely fitted to the wrist and is an impressive size with lots of presence. It hollow as is typical with these antique bangles and there are a few dents on the top near the clasp which might be expected given a 180+ year old age. Although we don't consider them to detract, they should be mentioned.
Pinchbeck is an antique gold substitute invented in the 18th century by London chemist & watchmaker Christopher Pinchbeck. A copper-based metal generally containing a small quantity of gold, authentic Pinchbeck jewellery is rarer than you might think! It fell out of favour in 1854 when 9ct gold was authorised in England as an alternative to high carat Georgian gold, all of a sudden real gold jewellery became much more affordable to ordinary people.
