This beautiful antique Victorian sterling silver disc brooch has an elegant scalloped outline and is superbly embossed and engraved in intricate design with thistles and acanthus leaves. The centre showcases a bezel set 12 carat Scottish citrine gemstone that is a pale lemon colour with misty grey undertones.
These quartz gemstones that are found in the Cairngorm Mountains in the Highlands of Scotland are known as Cairngorms and they include amethyst and smoky quartz as well as citrine. Cairngorms have long been considered to have magical and healing powers.
The brooch has a pin back with a simple C-claps and is stamped with a partially obscured makers mark "CHF", possibly Charles Henry Farquharson an Edinburgh silversmith active during the Victorian era. The brooch isn't marked for metal content as is typical in early pieces, we have acid tested and verified that it is sterling silver.
A wonderful Victorian 'Cairngorm' brooch that you will treasure, these genuinely old Scottish brooches are becoming harder and harder to find. They were the height of fashion after Queen Victoria purchased Balmoral Castle in Scotland in 1852, she set off a craze for "Scottish Pebble" jewellery which quickly became highly collectable and it still remains that way today!
