Evoking the colours and textures of the wild and craggy Scottish highland landscape this Victorian silver Cairngorm brooch is set with a myriad of Scottish chalcedony stones illustrating the wide variety of these spectacular agates.
Crafted in sterling silver the brooch is double walled and fashioned in a circular shield design with a row of agate tiles accenting the central citrine and a row of semi circular stones framing the outer edge. The agates are surrounded by silver chasing in a gothic pattern. Silver fleur-de-lis shaped posts hold the citrine aloft and the stone is held in place with dog tooth claws.
Lovely quality and fine workmanship a sturdy pin back with a t-hinge and an early handmade safety clasp completes this wonderful antique example of Scottish silversmithing. The safety clasp can be a little tricky, it has a scissor action with 2 levers and 'stops' so it is a little quirky but it is in perfect working order.
MATERIALS: sterling silver, acid tested
GEMSTONES: natural Scottish agates including bloodstone, carnelian and banded Montrose Blue. The citrine is 16mm diameter and is paste (glass)
HALLMARKS: None as is typical with earlier pieces
MEASUREMENTS: a tad under 1-1/2 inches diameter (3.8cm).
WEIGHT: 11.2 grams.
ERA: Victorian circa 1890
CONDITION: in good antique condition showing expected surface wear and signs of age, please see photos. One of the fleur-de-lis posts that attaches the citrine setting to the top of the brooch is missing and we have taken this into account with price. The setting is still fixed solidly and very secure, and it isn't noticeable when worn. The pin back is in perfect working order.
