A wonderful and unique Victorian carved Whitby jet pendant that represents a quaint long forgotten English custom, the draped door knocker! When a death occurred in a household, a black crepe and ribbon badge was placed on the front door covering the doorbell or knocker. This announced to any passers by or callers that the family were in mourning. We have never seen another quite like it!
The pendant is dimensional in a ribbon and crescent moon design with a faceted jet bead that is wired on to the front forming the knocker. The bead jiggles with movement giving a charming 'knock' effect.
We have added a new sterling silver trace chain, with its flat elegant oval links the chain adds a beautiful sparkle that complements the glossy black of the jet beautifully. Our chains are made in Italy, they are fine quality and fully hallmarked.
