An absolutely lovely vintage 14ct rolled gold pendant and chain manufactured by the Kordes & Lichtenfels company in Germany around 1950. Kordes & Lichtenfels were makers of high quality gold, silver and rolled gold jewellery from the late 19th century
Very much in the Victorian style the pendant has an ornate filigree and bead mount set with a lovely oval cut paste (glass) amethyst that radiates pale lilac and deep purple colour hues. It is stamped on the back of the bale 'K&L', '14ct RG' (rolled gold). The 19-3/4" (50cm) chain has curb links and has a tag that is stamped '1/20 12K' meaning the chain has a 12 carat gold overlay that is at least 20 microns thick. The pendant and chain weigh 4.3 grams.
The pendant and chain are in super condition with no wear at all to the gold overlay and no damage to the glass stone, just a lovely piece all round. Rolled gold (gold filled) is a mechanically bonded or heat fused overlay of solid gold onto a base metal, often silver. It is much thicker than modern electroplating and looks and feels just like solid gold.
