Grouse feet have long been considered a good luck charm and they been used in Scottish silver jewellery since the Victorian times.

The brooches were very fashionable attire worn at game shooting parties held at Scottish country houses and estates during the early 20th century. They were worn on lapels, kilts and cloaks, Queen Alexandra was photographed wearing one on her hat at Balmoral Castle in Scotland and they were just as popular with the men.

Grouse claw brooches were also given from one to another before a long period of separation, usually in friendship or love and this is a stylish example of this type of traditional Scottish jewellery.

Crafted in sterling silver the brooch is made by Ward Brothers and hallmarked for Glasgow in 1948. The foot is set in a plain silver cuff that is accented with a stag head. A paste amethyst stone is mounted into an embossed silver cup and a silver ring decorates the middle toe. The back benefits from a nice long pin stem that is flexible and sturdy.

The brooch is in very good condition with light wear in keeping with age. One of the prongs on the stone is missing, the stone is cemented in and doesn't move so it is secure in the setting, please see the photos. There is a good covering of furry feathers and all four claws are undamaged. The pin back is in good order, fastening securely.

A fabulous very vintage silver accent accessory good for the gents or the ladies, great for a Scottish themed wedding and a unique good luck gift, very collectable too!
