A striking vintage sterling silver and mahogany obsidian pendant hailing from Mexico. Obsidian is a naturally occurring gemstone, it forms over millions of years from the lava that has erupted from a volcanos. Although it is typically jet-black in colour, the presence of hematite (iron oxide) produces these interesting red and brown variegations within the stone. Interestingly the presence of hematite gives the stone a slight magnetic pull.
The mahogany obsidian is set into a bezel framed by a twisted silver wire and bead border. It is a deep reddish brown colour liberally marbled throughout in black. The pendant is a fairly large size and it has a generous heavy duty bale at the back that will accommodate a wide variety and thicknesses of chains, ribbons or cords (please note that the chain pictured is not included).
