A very desirable sterling silver penannular pin by Scottish silversmiths Henderson & Horner Brothers who were only active between 1935 and 1962 so their pieces are rare and hard to find. The brooch is also stamped with assay marks for Glasgow 1941. The assay office in Glasgow closed in 1964 resulting in these historic hallmarks becoming particularly sought after too.

The brooch is a fairly large size with lots of presence. It is decorated in an ancient Celtic pattern with striking details and texturing to the silver, the high points are bright polished which adds lots of dimension. It is solidly cast in silver with a heavy duty pin so will secure and gather the heaviest of fabrics.

Penannular pins date back to antiquity and are a traditional and way of fastening plaids and tartans. Typically they are worn by both men and women, usually at the shoulder by men and on the breast by women. To fasten, the pin is pushed through the folds of cloth, which are then pulled up inside the ring and the sharp end of the pin passes through the gap in the ring. You can then rotate the pin around the ring to give your desired effect.

A unique and collectible piece of traditional Scottish jewelry, less than 2 decades away from being a true 100 year old antique!
